Do you need a handwashing station on a job site?
OSHA's construction rule 29 CFR 1926.51(f) requires washing facilities when workers handle paint, coatings, herbicides or other contaminants that can be harmful. Many general contractors want a handwashing station on every site anyway. A station beside the porta potties covers that rule and keeps crews off the homeowner's sink.
Read OSHA 1926.51 and our OSHA porta potty guide.
How many handwashing stations does an event need?
Plan 1 handwashing station for every 4 or 5 porta potties, plus 1 next to any food or buffet line. A 200-guest party with 4 standard units needs 1 station by the restrooms. If a caterer serves food, add a second station at the food tent.
Food vendors may have their own county health rules. Check with the county health department that issues the food permit.
Questions about this unit
Is it cheaper to rent a separate handwashing station or a porta potty with a sink inside?
A separate handwashing station usually costs less than upgrading every unit to one with a sink. One station can serve 4 or 5 standard units. A unit with a sink inside makes more sense when you only need one restroom.
Does a handwashing station need a water hookup?
A portable handwashing station needs no water hookup. It carries its own fresh-water tank and a separate tank for used water. We fill it before delivery and refill it at each service.
Can the handwashing station freeze in winter?
The water in a handwashing station can freeze below about 32°F. For winter job sites, we discuss placement out of the wind and service timing. Ask about cold-weather options when you book a station between December and March.
Do you rent handwashing stations without a porta potty?
We rent handwashing stations on their own. Caterers, farmers markets and festivals often rent stations only, since the venue already has restrooms.
