How the calculator counts
- Events: 1 standard unit per 50 guests for up to 5 hours.
- Over 5 hours: add 1 unit per 100 guests; over 8 hours, add 2 per 100.
- Alcohol: add 1 unit per 100 guests (at least 1).
- Public events: at least 5% wheelchair-accessible, minimum 1 (ADA 213.2).
- Job sites: OSHA Table D-1 minimum, and our 1-per-10-workers advice for weekly service.
- Handwashing: 1 station per 5 units, and at least 1 when food is served.
How many porta potties do you need per guest?
Plan 1 standard porta potty for every 50 guests at an event of up to 5 hours. That rule is the Sure Portable Toilets sizing method, based on about 200 uses per unit before service. A 5-hour, 150-guest party needs 3 units before adding for alcohol or a longer event.
| Guests | Up to 5 hrs | 6–8 hrs | Up to 5 hrs + alcohol | 6–8 hrs + alcohol |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 50 | 1 | 2 | 2 | 3 |
| 100 | 2 | 3 | 3 | 4 |
| 150 | 3 | 5 | 5 | 7 |
| 200 | 4 | 6 | 6 | 8 |
| 300 | 6 | 9 | 9 | 12 |
| 500 | 10 | 15 | 15 | 20 |
Worked example: 150-guest graduation party with a bar
A 150-guest graduation party lasting 6 hours with beer and wine needs 7 standard porta potties. The base is 150 ÷ 50 = 3 units. The party runs past 5 hours, so add 2 (1 per 100 guests, rounded up). Alcohol adds 2 more. Food is served, so add 2 handwashing stations.
If the party is open to the public, make 1 of the 7 a wheelchair-accessible unit.
How many porta potties does a job site need?
A job site needs at least 1 toilet for 20 or fewer workers under OSHA Table D-1. Above 20 workers, the minimum is 1 seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers, and above 200 workers it is 1 per 50. For weekly service without overflow, we recommend 1 unit per 10 workers.
| Number of workers | Minimum facilities (OSHA Table D-1) | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 20 or fewer | 1 toilet | A 12-person framing crew: 1 unit |
| 20 or more | 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers | A 45-person crew: 2 units |
| 200 or more | 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 50 workers | A 220-person site: 5 units |

How many accessible porta potties are required?
At least 5 percent of the porta potties in each cluster must be wheelchair-accessible, and never fewer than 1, under section 213.2 of the 2010 ADA Standards. A row of 12 units needs 1 accessible unit. A row of 21 needs 2. Each separate cluster counts on its own.

Questions renters ask
Do women need more porta potties than men?
Events with mostly women guests use units longer per visit. Adding 1 unit per 100 guests on top of the chart keeps lines short. Men's urinal use is faster, which the standard chart already assumes.
How many porta potties for 1,000 people?
A 1,000-person event of up to 5 hours needs 20 standard units by our method. Add 10 for alcohol and 10 more if it runs 6 to 8 hours. Large public events may also fall under state health rules, so check your permit.
Can one porta potty handle 100 people?
One porta potty for 100 people works only for a short, light-use gathering. Lines form and the tank fills faster than it should. Two units are the safe number for 100 guests over a few hours.
